Last night i put my washer on as usual and sat down watching tele. I thought it sounded a bit different but left it. This morning when i got up to put my clothes in the dryer they were soaking wet. Now i know it obviously hasn,t spun and i,ve tried spinning it again 3 times since but no joy. What has happened and what do i need to do to get it fixed ?

Try putting the machine on to wash with no clothes in, if the drum turns for the wash but not the spin the most likely problem will be the carbon brushes in the motor. I doubt very much if its the belt unless it has snapped - they don't stretch! Depending on the make of the machine this is a easy problem to repair, most motors are held on with 2 bolts & the carbon brushes are normally in plastic holders & you replace the whole lot including the holder which are normally held in with 2 screws or jsut snapped in. Anyone with a bit of common sense can do the job in 20mins.

First, you need to determine if the "V" belt is not slipping. Did the washer empty all the water but did not spin? If the water is gone but it did not "spin dry" the clothes, then there are 2 or 3 possible causes:
1.Is there corrosion inside the washing machine? Sometimes the cause can be a lose electrical wire connection: Unplug and clean any corroded connection and reconnect, (be sure the washer is unplug from the wall).
2.Another possible cause is the timer. The timer has built-in contacts that can break with wear or abuse (turning the timer too fast). To test the timer you need to know how to use an electric or ohm meter. If you don’t know how to use them call the repair man (Unless your washer is less than 2 years old, it is not worth fixing the timer).
3.Another cause of the problem may be the transmission, unless you are handy, I would not try to repair or replace this. Just get a new washer.

If your washer is 5years old, it’s cheaper in the long run to replace it. If you can't afford a new washer, then get a used one, but make sure that it is not older than 3 or 4 years.

It could be a belt or what they call a motor coupling, depends on what brand it is. You can go on www3.sears.com and put your model number in and it will help you find a picture of the unit and a break down of the parts. I worked in appliance repair for 6 years I do know what I'm talking about. If its not the belt or a coupling, it could be the lid switch. Check out the website I gave you and it will help, get someone handy to check it out for you, will save you money.

well does it agitate? if not the belt could be off the pullys or the motor could be burned out simple fixes there

not likely if it works but you may have a bad timer

most likely a cloged drain in the washer itself if the washer is still full of water

My old washing machine did that twice and both times it needed a new belt. If it is responding to the program ie if its making all the right noises but just isn't spinning then a broken/slipped belt is your likely culprit.

This is more than likely a bad belt but this is not the only thing that could be wrong you could have blown the motor or spun a barring.

it sounds very much like you have got a choked hose inside the washing machine there are spring clips on the hoses which can be removed to check the usual thing that blocks is coins

The last time this happened to me there was a sock in the drain hose behind the machine. maybe you could check that?I think to find it we had to dip out the water and then run something through the hose to push the sock out.

The ratcheting mechanism just below were you put the fabric softener in, has broke or is stripped. If you, or someone you know is mechanically inclined, can fix it for you in a matter of minutes after you get the parts.

Thanks for all the details such as the brand and does it run and not spin or not run at all in the spin cycle. Since you were so vague here is my vague possible problems.
motor, timer, belt, pump, lid switch, wiring harness and no power to the washer. I hope that helps.
