Our Pathfinder was knocking pretty bad, like it needed oil, but everytime we checked the oil, the dipstick read that we were full. It started getting really bad, and I finally decided to put a quart in to see if it would help, it did, no more knocking, my question is, could we have been reading the wrong dipstick, (they are hard to find on this vehicle) it was right by the place where you dump the oil, but it only reads hot/cold... or is there such a thing as a messed up dipstick? Ithink it is a 1997

I have a '97 Pathfinder. The dipstick is on the driver's side (port side if it were a ship). The transmission fluid dipstick is located on the passenger (starboard) side close to the fire wall.

Sniff the oil on the dipstick? Does it smell like gas? If so the oil is thinned out by the gas. Change the oil.

If you put engine oil in the transmission (red dipstick) then dont drive it.

D42D hit it right. It may need a another quart when you find the right dipstick.

The Armada is definitely larger, heavier and mor effective. The Pathfinder comes inventory with a 4 liter V6, with the 5.6 liter V8 decision for 2008. The Armada basically provides the V8.

if it says hot and cold on it that is not the engine dipstick it is for the transmission. go to your local garage where you get your oil changed and have them show you the correct one
