It depends on the child. Children do not mature at the same rate. I know some 14 year olds who act 25, and some that act 10. It is only an issue if the child becomes overly socially awkward (immature) or if they begin to act prematurely in dangerous situations such as drugs and sex.

The media is as aware of the concern as parents are. Tweens are rushed to grow up by peers and parents alike - too much responsibility, to much expendible cash and not enough concequence or moral education. Kids are not equiped to deal with the pressures but they are forced to behave in a way consistant with 16-18 year olds by the school systems and TV/Movie Role models no one seems to see they haven't even left elementary school yet. My daughter started asking about her period at 7, she wanted to know so much I was startled-seems her friends get to watch PG13 and R rated movies and their parents don't even supervise their web access. I try to let my kids be kids but in this crazy world it is really tough. I wish we could slow down advertisers, educators and peers but all we can do is the best we can and hope for the best.
