Removing Norton is always a horrible experience. Try the Norton Removal Tool:

Normally if you are putting another newer Norton I think the newer one should squash the old ones. But if you want to un install, then go Start Up / Settings / Add & Remove programmes. then look for Norton and any other related programmes, and delete them, then go back again and delete the Symantec programme, restart and after inatall your new Norton.

First stop norton internet security if it is running by going to services. Then try removing it thru application uninstall or add/remove program options.
After u stop norton services you will be able to delete live reg.

If your trying to install a later version of NIS, you don't need to uninstall the earlier version. NIS as already taken into account that a previous version could be on the computer. Go ahead and install the new version.
