Anything but DELL.
Especially DELL notebooks.
SONY's cost a bit more, but are reliable.
HP is good. Gateway is OK.
You'll find complaints on all systems, but DELL, in my opinion is awful. Here's why:
http://one-simple-idea.com/RatherThanSimplySayDellStinks.htm
I've owned about a dozen computers over the past 20 years (IBM, HPs, SONYs, COMPAQs, MICRONs, Texas Instruments, Acer, Toshiba, Gateway, custom built PCs, etc.) and ALL of those ( all put together), did not have the total number of problems that this one DELL notebook model had. Also, if consumers do some research, they will see that DELL has the highest percentage of complaints (based on 17.9% market share). See the truth about DELL . . . it's the percentages that really count: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/computer_complaints.html (complaints to www.consumeraffairs.com for 2004):
Company_ __ Gripes%__ _MarketShare%_
_________ ____________ _____________
Dell______ 633 ___ 58% _ 17.9%
Gateway__ 159 ___ 15% _____ ?
eMachine__ 89 ____ 8% _____ ?
Apple______ 77 ___ 7% _ 3.6%
HP________ 53 ___ 5% _ 15.8%
Sony______ 37 ____ 3% _____ ?
Toshiba____ 22 ____ 2% _____ ?
Compaq___ 15 ____ 1% _____ ?
IBM_______ _2 ____ ?% __ 5.9%
_________ ____________ _____________
Even though HP has almost the same market share,
DELL has 11.6 times more complaints than HP .

Sony's.. is that a joke? LOL
I had a Sony VAIO, boy was it a piece. Everyone I know, has had bad experiences with Sony's as well. Recently I got a new computer as well, since "Black Friday" had good deals. Here's what I had ran upon..
AMD Athlon HP
Processor 3800+
Gig of RAM
256MB Vid. Card Onboard GeForce [Not sure of exact specs]
Says 1.00Ghz, but from the tests i've done with it, says it can run up to 5.7Ghz.
Best computer i've ever had honestly, can't say anything bad about it, other than the on-board video card eats 64MB of my RAM until I get a real video card, but it still runs flawlessly.
Total cost after rebates for it was $499.99 @ Circuit City. Blows all those others out of the water, & that's with an upgraded 17" flat panel. Dell's IMO aren't that great, overpriced when you can build your own for cheaper, and it'll end up better.
Check these sites out,

Good luck, and whatever you do, stay away from Celerons.

The name on the outside of the box means nothing.
It is what's inside which count.
The two vital parts are the motherboard and the CPU.
If you have a cheap motherboard, chances are that it will burn out in 12 months time. Motherboards are one of the most common problems with PCs.
If you are serious about this, you will do your homework.
Get the list of all the hardware in the box.
Then check every item on the net for prices and reviews.
Even the power supply is important.
Most computers have the generic 230W power supply.
A good video card might require 300W
Or the simple way is to trust the sale people.
If it is expensive, chances are that it has all the good bits in it.
If it is cheap, it has all the cheap bits in it.
It is usually how it works.
If you want cheap, you can buy a very good second hand Pentium III for $50.00

Well...It depends on you actually, If you are just thinkiing of buying one computer, and not buying anythings alse from a company, then i wouldn't recommend getting a dell. Because if you don't buy a product from dell in a certain period of time, your interest rates will go up up to 28.88% if you have a Dell prefered account (DPA). ..
If you want to get a pc just to work around with, get in the internet, and do other stuff, get a pc around 300-500 dollars. Dell has a 300 dollar pc witch is the basic one.
ok..here are the specs that i would recommend to have on a pc to work around that would last for a few years:
Pentium 4 processor.
2.80 GHz
512mb
80Gb hard drive
windows Xp home edition
this would cost you around 400-500$

A lot depends on what you want to do with the computer. If you just want to email, surf the web, and run a few small applications; you can get almost anything. If you want to download music, pictures, store videos and things like that; you need something with a lot of memory. I have both Dell and HP and love both. I would stay away from compaq as I have heard a lot of bad things about their reliability.

For any PC, I would feel that the brand name itself in not important, since all of them are getting their parts from more or less the same manufacturer.
Choose the one with the best after sale support. Personally, my experience with Dell is the best. So I would suggest you get a Dell machine.
