They now have it where you can go online and file for divorce. All you have to do is fill it out (it take a while) print it and then have him sign it and pay for it to be filed. (depending on your state) I did my divorce that way and it only cost 300 dollars for the entire thing. But your hubby needs to be in compliant too. that helps.

If you dont have kids that is good in a way, because now you dont have much to fight over except possessions. a thousand dollars is actually not bad for a retainer fee, remember you get what you pay for. My lawyers retainer was 1000 and he was excellent. Keep in mind that every time you call your lawyer, you will get charged. I was charged a hundred dollars for every phone call. My advise would be to keep this divorce short and sweet, and know your rights, dont call the lawyer every time. read up on the divorce laws in your state. They vary by state, in Wisconsin, personal property you owned before you married is now marital property, and can be divided as such. Hopefully you two get a quick divorce, mine wasnt, but we had a child to factor in......If you both agree to all terms, who should get what, basically uncontested, you can represent yourself which would save you a bundle...

If the divorce is pretty much uncontested (eg. no arguments over child custody or possessions), then you can represent yourself. Most states have posted divorce laws online. Just type in your state name and the words "divorce laws" on your internet browser. You can then see what the laws are in your state, including separation time, etc. Also, you can agree out of court to a settlement. The court will respect the decision, assuming there are no contested issues. Good luck to you in your new life.

see the clerk of the court in the place you live, they usually have self help packets, costs about 400 bucks for filing fees and such.
