I get them all day long (some 5 mins aprt, some an hour apart). Some hurt some don't. So I am just confused as to what they are.

Real contractions get longer, stronger, and closer together. That is about the only way to tell.

Braxton Hicks tend to be a bunching feeling in your abdomen that comes and goes without really intensifying. These should only last for brief periods and may get better if you walk around. With real contractions, the intensity will get stronger and stronger, regardless of whether you move around.

You can tell. With my first I went to the hospital 2 times and they hooked me up to a monitor and monitored my contractions. Once I was induced I could tell a HUGE difference in braxton hicks and full blown contractions. Real contractions are almost unbearable. Braxton Hicks is like a pinching feeling. You will know once you have real contractions.
