My husband filed for a divorce. Dont get me wrong this makes me so happy. Just for the fact that i had the papers but didnt have the money to file them. Anyway my questions are after i sign that i have recieved the papers what happens after that? We still have bills that need to be paid how do i get those known to him and the judge? I live in a different county and do not have reliable transportation to where he is how do i ask to change the venue? (He lives 4 1/2 hours away)

Try talking to him first if U havent already, both of you handle this right and you will be happy rather than a leach (lawyer). You may save enough to pay your bills with less stress.

If you are seeking any debt relief or division of family property or child or spousal support, or if he is asking for any of these things in the petition, you should get a lawyer. (If you are not making much and any of the above mentioned relief is at issue, you may be able to get a legal aid lawyer....if not call around..there are lots of lawyers that will take post dated cheques in lieu of a retainer.) Trust me...if you try to represent your self you will likely make a mess and lose out on things you may be entitled to, or end up needing a lawyer in the long run who will charge even more to straighten out all the stuff that got messed up.

If however, the only thing you and he are seeking is a simple divorce (ie. no custody, support, debt or asset issues) you can do nothing and he will be able to obtain a straight divorce. DO NOT DO THIS IF HE IS ASKING FOR ANY RELIEF OTHER THAN A DIVORCE.

It would help to know what State you are in as well

There is such thing called the "Long Armed Statute"...this allows the courts to conduct the process without you ever traveling so far away. Check with your local Commonwealth Atty's office or Circuit Court to see if it is applicable in your state. Do contact an attorney, shop around, you can find that their rates can be nominal. Do not allow him to be granted the divorce without these bills being produced!

Best regards!!

You need an attorney, hon. Nothing you get here will be of any use to you - unless you hear from an atty! Good luck.

PS - You may be able to get your husband to pay for your attorney's fees... Don't be shy about getting a good one!
