Because unlike the human system, the female opposum has two separate uteri, one just below each ovary. The forked penis allows sperm to be deposited into each fork of the vagina, thereby reaching both uteri.

they have a forked penis because they can mate with 3 opussum ladies at a time
in a society like ours today
endangered species are becoming a common things
and therefore they have adapted so that reproduction will be faster and extinction or endangerment won't be a problem in the future

Did you know they fall over when mating? The female can't conceive if they don't fall!
