I think a card is more than enough to say happy birthday to a new friend. It shows you rememberd and have got the thought and the time to get up and go and get the card just for him (which says your a friend all in its self)

How about a gift card to a local store that he likes and a nice card, they have singing cards at Hallmark and Wal-Mart now too. (Which you could just ask where he shops at) OR you could just get a card a a simple bouquet of balloons!

a card is all that is needed at this stage - unless he has invited you to a party - then a small gift would be appropriate - if you do not know his tastes take a bottle of good wine or champagne.

Yes...if he's new to your circle...definitely help him to feel welcome by buying him a birthday gift. They make cards for "new friends"...and you could always treat him out to dinner and buy him a little cake.

tell him you don't know much about him,but as he's your frind and you appreciate your friends you're giving him a small token of appreciation(probably a card you can make one on the computer)nothing personal though!
