This is something I've always wondered about... Why is the U.S.?

Some countries identify themselves with their culture. To alter the culture would alter their identity, and this is change that not many societies deal well with. Check out America...we are having an identity crisis right now. Are we a war nation? Are we a peace nation? Are we unified nation? Who knows?

The most violent places on Earth are where they do not have an identity or history.

The US is far enough away from Europe & the Middle East that we don't have as much turmoil.

Also, in those areas (especially the Middle East) there have long been in-fighting. The Sunis & Kurds & Shites have always been after each other - the current fighting is nothing new.

If you live in a country torn by war, how can you help your country advance? You don't have time & resources, you're just trying to survive.

I think it is particular to specific fields. Obviously Sony Japan makes Wiis and Apple US makes iPods, so there is a definite gap with regards to technology, but doesnt a Tibetan Monk have a leg up in the spirituality category? Isnt it possible that an eskimo is happier and more stress-free while fishing on a frozen lake than a businessman racing to catch a flight to London?

There are as many reasons as there are countries. Many of these countries were settled (as was the US) by people from nations that were already more developed. Also many nations regions continued to remain primarily agricultural when the industrial revolution began.
