These must obviously be women who combined beauty with intelligence and wit to make them absolutely fascinating! And I don't want to think of mythical Helens.

So:

Cleopatra. Quite apart from how she's portrayed in the two great English plays - Shakespeare's and Shaw's - there can be no doubt she exercised fascination on all around, from her youth to late middle-age.

Cosima, daughter of Franz Liszt and the Countess d'Agoult.
I pick her not merely because of her second marriage to Richard Wagner but because she was able to get away with bearing him a son many months before her divorce from Hans von Bulow. Was it his indifference, continuing fascination with Cosima, or admiration for Wagner's work that made him still devote his talents to interpreting Wagner's music? Fascinating... lo!

Elizabeth Taylor Significantly, she interpreted Cleopatra, but not exactly in a wonderful film. Rather more, because of the OTHER films she made with Richard Burton. She again, exercised sufficient fascination over Burton to draw him back to a second marriage with her.

Margaret Thatcher Her politics were loathsome, but she spoke and acted with style. I fear that if I met her there would be mutual distaste. But certainly a formidable and fascinating woman.

Segolene Royal More acceptable politics, although I know she's shrewdly dodging questions. Well, isn't that, too, a feminine wile? If she DOES get elected, that's proof she deserves to be here. What would Thatcher say? Four children and no husband! What is the world coming to?
