I woke up in the middle of the night because it felt like some kind of liquid kept running down my throat and I kept swallowing (it was blood), and as soon as I sat up, my nose was bleeding. This hasn't happened in a long time but it has happened before, maybe a year ago. What would trigger it?

Thanks for the quick responses - I am in a college dorm room; it's kind of hot in here but it couldn't be humid - it's about 40 degrees outside and the windows are open.

Are you having a winter climate where you live? If the heat is running and you are not adding humidity into the air, your nasal passages become very dried out. Try a humidifier and some saline spray like Ocean.

If it continues you should see a doctor - could be a polyp or something.

It could be a couple of things. Do you have high blood pressure? This can cause nosebleeds. Also dry air, the tiny veins and capillaries in your nose are very close to the surface and can break open if your nose gets really dry. Maybe you bumped your nose in your sleep. Hope these help.

You might try a little dab of Vaseline inside the nose. Sometimes the lining of the nose gets dry and bleeds, use humidity in the room also.

Yes, it's too dry. You need a cool mist vaporizer (sometimes also called humidifiers). Don't buy the cheap kind that's just a fan and a tub of water. Those don't work. The vaporizer puts vastly more moisture into the air. There are also warm mist humidifiers but they warm mist can cause your lungs to swell. Cool mist is best.

I get them during the winter because of the heat. It dries out the air in the room. If it becomes a problem get a humidifier for your room.

It could be anything from the lack of moisture in the air, a change in pressure systems or even an allergy.
