no I think revenge is a horrible thing and you should never kill (though I will not deny the fact that I would be motivated to kill someone to save someone I love, but that's human nature...to some extent).

I think you need to qualify your question a little bit more. And those two things are completely different subject. I mean, for example, if you are proposing aborting a baby to save a mother who will die in childbirth, then the answer is that it's up to the mother. There are many aspects. You have to define "life", first of all. This question comes up in situations where someone is in a comma that they probably will never come out of. Do you use their organs to save someone else's life? Is that person still alive if he/she cannot LIVE? I personally believe that, sometimes, these decisions are necessary, and if extinguishing one life saves another life, IN MOST SITUATIONS OF THIS KIND, it is worth it.
Now as for the second part of the question, it is NEVER ok to take a life out of revenge. That person has to live with the physical and metaphysical consequences of taking a life. You don't need to suffer those same consequences for revenge.

Well you must see the movie: "Kill Bill 2" and you will know the answer.
Self defense is legal and a must to prevent other people killing you or your family.
Revenge leads to nothing more than another revenge and more killing; so it is not the good way.

it is but natural to take the life of the person who took ones life, lest he goes on and kills someone else too...... and so on and so forth
Al-Baqara (The Cow)
2:178 O YOU who have attained to faith! Just retribution is ordained for you in cases of killing: the free for the free, and the slave for the slave, and the woman for the woman. [147] And if something [of his guilt] is remitted to a guilty person by his brother, [148] this [remission] shall be adhered to with fairness, and restitution to his fellow-man shall be made in a goodly manner. [149] This is an alleviation from your Sustainer, and an act of His grace. And for him who, none the less, [150] wilfully transgresses the bounds of what is right, there is grievous suffering in store:
2:179 for, in [the law of] just retribution, O you who are endowed with insight, there is life for you, so that you might remain conscious of God!
An-Nisa (The Women)
4:92 AND IT IS not conceivable that a believer should slay another believer, unless it be by mistake. [114] And upon him who has slain a believer by mistake there is the duty of freeing a believing soul from bondage and paying an indemnity to the victim's relations, [115] unless they forgo it by way of charity. Now if the slain, while himself a believer, belonged to a people who are at war with you, [116] [the penance shall be confined to] the freeing of a believing soul from bondage; whereas, if he belonged to a people to whom you are bound by a covenant, [it shall consist of] an indemnity to be paid to his relations in adÂdition to the freeing of a believing soul from bonÂdage. [117] And he who does not have the wherewithal shall fast [instead] for two consecutive months. [118] (This is) the atonement ordained by God: and God is indeed all-knowing, wise.
Al-Isra (The Journey by Night)
17:33 And do not take any human being's life -[the life] which God has willed to be, sacred-otherwise than in [the pursuit of] justice. [38] Hence, if anyone has been slain wrongfully, We have empowered the defender of his rights [to exact a just retribution] ; [39] but even so, let him not exceed the bounds of equity in [retributive] killing. [40] [And as for him who has been slain wrongfully -] behold, he is indeed succoured [by God] ! [41]

Under most circumstances, no. There are exceptions though.
Many women have gotten men to kill their abusive husbands. It is hard to deal with many years of abuse without fighting back some time.
People who murder others and then continue on the killing spree should be killed.
Take care,
Troy

To save another? Depends on the situation.
Absolutely for revenge, just so they know how it feels.

You have a moral obligation to protect and defend yourself and your family.
If that includes taking a Life to protect your Sister or Mother...so be it.
Revenge? another issue. You will know it inside you, if you need to take revenge.
