You can tell real easy if it's the carb accelerator pump. Look down into the carb and quickly open the throttle. You should see two streams of gas, one going into each primary.
If you don't, rebuild the carb. The pump is just a rubber diaphragm and they have a tendency to tear.
If you do see the squirts, maybe you have a vacuum leak, but my money is on the pump.
Like marinespill says below, a sixpack helps, and definitely rebuild in on the kitchen table!

There are several things which might cause the problem but I would certainly change out the plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor and fuel filters. I'd then check the timing. If this is the original engine and has not been worked on, the timing chain may have worn and need to be replaced. (If this is the case, consider changing the water pump as most of the work to access the pump will be done while getting to the timing chain. The water pump is in-expensive)

this can be caused my many different things including improper ignition timing setting, bad spark plug wires, bad spark plugs, choke stuck shut some or all the the way almost, and other things
i would pull a few of the spark plugs and read them, what reading means is to check them sto see how they look they should be a light tanor a light gray color and not wet or black or smelly or covered in bumps or deposits
if they are then make sure the right brand and part number plugs are in the engine and that timing and fuel system is correctly set
good luck

You can get a carb rebuild kit for $20, three cans of Gumout, a sixpack and overhaul the carb. The kit will include a new accelerator pump diaphram and gaskets and stuff. If the sixpack doesn't make you feel better, the Gumout fumes will.

yea the carb could be dirty.i had a car did that and it was the pump in the carb,so i just overhauled it with a can of carb cleaner and a carb kit.but a set of plugs would help, check the timing, and also check the cat,and plug wires.
