Cockatiels are wonderful pet birds from Australia. They are bigger than budgies but smaller than parrots. They can be all white, or grey and also various marbled shades in-between. They are incredibly intelligent and some can be as affectionate as a kitten. They bond with their carer to an amazing degree.
All of them have spots on their cheeks, and all of them have lovely little hair-dos called crests, which stand up like a comb when they get excited or cross or curious or wary. Otherwise they lie flat.
When they need feeding as babies, they make the most delightful purring sound. If you rear them from that stage they will love you forever.
Some can be taught to talk; others to do all kinds of entertaining tricks, such as riding a mini-bike on a high wire. My cockattiel, Funky, is a dancer. I've had him for 13 years now, and don't know for sure how old he is really, as he was an adult already when I took him in. He sings and dances all the time. Keeps the beat with whatever tune is playing. Delightful!
They are sociable birds and can be kept with any other bird that isn't aggressive by nature. They are easy to feed and love fresh salad and seasonal wild grass as a supplement to their seed diet. They like sunshine and a quick shower from a mister if they haven't access to a bath.
The saddest thing about them is their instincts to fly high. I have never managed to recapture an escaped cockatiel but my Rossella parrotlets and lovebirds were eager to return to their aviaries or cages after a couple of nights in the wild! Cockies seem to go up, up and away for some reason. I still remember the shocked look on Dodo's face when he escaped, as if he couldn't stop himself from going higher and further ...
Truly lovely birds and easy to breed in captivity so no harm done to nature!
I told you just about all I know ... so tell me what you know!
