Essentially, investment banking is selling client's securities, usually in the public market. Say, you are a company that wants to go public or needs to place a billion dollars worth of bonds; you hire an investment bank (also called an underwriter) that makes it happen. The investment bank then is paid a fee and is often given a percentage of the offering.
