I am on my 4th pregnancy, will be my 3rd live birth if all goes well and I have only ever done the on your back legs up position when in labor. With my first I knew no better and had not done any real research, and my second went so fast that I really had no time for anything else. I would like to know experiences from other women who have had babies and used different positions, why do you feel that it works well, and what positions would you recommend?

I liked the standing up on my bed with the "bar" Holding on position. It was natural it felt like I was going to the bathroom. With the gravity pushing down it was nice.

I havent tried other positions because I had a tube laying in my cervix during labor, but I have tried different positions to help to ease some of the labor pains and they work great, and you can also give birth in those positions as well. The position that worked best for me was to stand up and bend over across a chair or bed, and have your husband,bf or nurse lock their hands and press them on your lower back, it relieves that heavy feeling when you are not in labor and it also eases the pain when you are in actual labor.

On your back is definately the worst position to birth in. Sure, the caregiver can see better, but it's hardest on your body!

I used a semi-sitting position with my first in a hospital bed.

My second and third were waterbirths. With #2 I pushed her head out squatting and the rest of her on hands and kneees. With #3 the birth tub was above ground. My MW stood behind me outside the tub and supported me from behind while I squatted. Hubby was in the tub with me and caught the baby. The supported squat seemed to be the best position for me.

Squatting opens up your pelvis wider and it also lets you get gravity on your side.

During the labor phase, if you can manage it with all the monitering equipment, try to get up and around, squat, lean against your husband, whatevers comfortable. During the birthing, although sqautting can make it go more quickly its kind of uncomfortable and you need to have a hospital that specializes in these kind of births because theirs a special chair you use.

I did all different positions. Squatting seems to work well due to gravity.
