I think that music is a gift from God and that's why it has such power over our emotions. Sometimes it's the only way for us to get in touch with our feelings. And to realize our full human potential (which He wants for us), we need to be fully engaged in our lives. That engagement stems from our emotions.

what a loaded question!
for me, music is the heart and soul of everyday. i wake up each morning with a new song that overpowers my day. i'll sing or hum that song throughout the day. it overtakes my being.
music is soothing, arousing, energizing, and sorrowful. hearing a song from 10, 20, 30 years ago brings back a sense of time long gone. it causes me to remember what was happening in my life at that time. music conjures up old memories, some happy, some sad.
in 1997, i went through a 9 month episode of clinical depression. what i most realized during that time was that my SINGER was lost. music did not appeal to me and this left me feeling broken.
gradually, as i recovered, my love for music returned. an old frined had come home.
i'm never alone when the music is playing. it's becomes my best friend. it doesn't judge me or expect anything in return. it's there for my joy and pleasure.

All of God's creation vibrates at different frequencies. That is part of what keeps us from all melding together with rocks, etc. Music stirs the frequencies of our bodies and minds for either joy, sorrow, etc. That is why Psalm 100 tells us to come before The Lord making a Joyful noise. That is why music is used in so many religious ceremonies (all faiths). That is why radical Islam prohibits it. It can cause joy and they are not a very joyful bunch. God Bless, and Rock On!

It's probably because it's written by emotional people who express their emotions through their music. It shows that their music is beautifully written to be able to allow us to feel the current emotion they were feeling at that point in time while they were writing it. Humans are generally easily influenced.
