You should do a play that is appropriate to your age group and your group's dynamic. For example, you do not want to put on "twelve angry men" if you only have six people. Look for a play that calls for the right number of males and females that you have.

Do you guys sing or not? Will you have music? If you don't have confident singers or the accoustics to provide musical accompaniment, then you know not to look at musicals.

What timeframe do you have? Do you have a set date by which the play must be ready? When will it be? You do not want to do a Christmas production if your play goes up in February. But it might be a good time to plan something romantic in time for Valentine's Day. If you don't have much time to prepare, it might be a good idea to choose a one-act so that you are not overwhelmed.

Think about what message you want to send. Who will you be putting the play on for? Will it be friends and family, students your own age, or for the whole community? Think about your audience and what they might enjoy.

I think you should avoid taking on anything too heavy for your first production and instead do something catchy that everyone will enjoy. Do you want it to be funny, sweet, or serious? Choose a genre of play based on the audience you expect to perform for. Then, you should all take a trip to the library together and look at different plays to see which ones you could feasibly cast.

If you can't find something you all find suitable, why not write your own based on something personal to your group, school or community? Good luck!

Assuming this is a young group, no offense, I suggest stay in an age appropriate genre. For one thing it will be easier to relate to.
I also suggest shying away from topics that might be controversial, and might not be those anyone in the 'club" has great knowledge about, or experience in. That said however, certainly timely subject matter relating to society within your age ranges might work. Social comments, especially by youth, are sometimes disregarded generally, but your core audiences might "Get It" as they become involved and can find references from their own experiences.

I personally enjoy creating situations of an off beat nature, or one that may even cause "gasps", or "Hmmm's"

Certainly you want to entertain, and gain credibilty, so you might consider light hearted fare? Especially for your first effort it should not strictly be the road less traveled, and familiar to all who you do involve,,, in context.

Without knowing the venue, your support systems, your budget concerns, or time restraints, or commitment and passion within the group, it sounds like Vote taking time.

I'd create a script using headlines and articles from today's news. The lofty arrogance of the BBC, the catty tone of the celebrity news and the fear driven headlines of terrorism.

The material is there, just put it together. I think seeing some students perform this would be chilling and amazing. I imagine about 20 minutes total, it could be great.

I can just imagine after listening to a character describe the coal mine disaster in China, Miss Horoscope waving her hand and saying "look at me look at me" and completely distracting us from real news.

If you do a play now, it should have a Christmas theme. The go-to play would be Dicken's "Christmas Carol" which can be adapted to any time frame and age group.
