Usually they mean to bring names of people they can contact, not necessarily a written document.

Ask people at your last job, preferably in positions of importance, if you can use them as a reference. If you don't want your present employer to know you're looking, ask people you trust not to say anything if you can use them as well.

If you left your last employer on good terms I wouldn't of thought they would refuse to supply a reference for you. If they do it might be difficult for you to explain at your interview. You can explain why you don't have one from your current employer by saying you don't want them to know you are seeking new employment. Could you obtain a personal reference - if you belong to a club or do volunteer work - the prospective employers might accept a character reference - you might like to check with them if you seem to be struggling. Good luck!

If you were a decent employee, your past employer shouldn't have a problem with providing a written Reference. Some employers simply tell you to provide their phone number instead but a written document is always better.

When you leave an employment, provided it's on good terms, always ask for a Letter of Recommendation...keep the originals all on file and just provide copies to prospective employers...this way you always have them on hand just in case.

Good luck

You could ask a supervisor or work colleague, whom you trust to write a character reference for you. If you are a member of a club or society, the committee they might be worth approaching for a character reference.
