I'm not sure what classes as good or bad in terms of instincs. We have an instinct to mate - because all species are made with survival and perpetuation of the species as a basic drive. We have an instinct to survive as individuals, not just as a species, therefore we avoid things that are likely to kill us. Part of the survival instinct is fear, and also the drive to avoid pain. Paradoxically, in some people the drive to avoid pain overrides the drive to survive and they commit suicide. I don't think any one instinct is strictly good or bad, only how we apply them. Man has gone a step further with the ability of reason, to satisfy drives in different ways. Maintaining social order aids in avoiding punishment (by social or legal means), and even gallantry (saving a child or pregnant woman at the expense of oneself, for instance) serves the need to perpetuate the species.

Instincts are a pre-set behavior pattern, when exposed to a stimulus. In human beings they are usually very subtle and often deal with reproduction. Because the individual is often not aware of the pattern its frequently noticed more by an outsider observing.
