why does my pc not run at 1080i on my HDTV?

i am using a Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics card with the latest drivers that support hdtv to my tv that is able to display 1080i as i also run my xbox 360 on it at 1080. it is linked via a dvi to hdmi cable. it is only running at 720p. the screen just goes all liney and faded and out of proportion etc? please help. thank you.

Maybe the graphics card itself won't support that high a resolution.

Whats youre os ?
you are running it thro' windows media center ?
cable from aerial to pc,
then scart to dvd player
