I want to restain it to a lighter... maybe oak shade. I bought PAINT stripper, but it doesn't take everything off so I can see the bare wood. Don't I have to get it all off and down to the bare wood?
Do I have to sand it too?
What about the crevices in the door panels???
Isn't there a wood stain remover I can apply and scrape off??

Lots of questions...yikes!
Hope I am not in over my head because I already started and it's not looking good right now.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Ok it is called D. I. Y. (do it yourself)..
this is an exception to the D.I.Y
you have started off good and your idea is right but you do not have the tools to do this job
Here is what i would do at this time take the door to the nearest carpentry shop and ask them there if they can help you by (sand plasting) getting the old paint, stain, ect.. off the door tell them what you would like to do with it (OK it will cost you maybe 20$) but it will be clean and you will not need to sand it any more...
have done this and the time saved well Good luck

OK you should sand the door but do it by hand because a machine will dig to deep. Using a machine will also give you the possibility of putting burn marks in the wood. Now wood is porous much like our skin so that the stain can soak in. Then it is covered with a sealer to close off those pours. The next step was lacquer to protect the wood and give it a hard shiny finish. So lightly sand the door until it looks very white and powdery then dust it off and finish striping the door with lacquer thinner ( not paint thinner) and just a thought but if you leave the dark stain in the crevices and go lite over the entire door that would be beautiful.

You should go all the way to the bare wood. If stripping it hasn't worked, then yes, you should sand down the door as well to insure a smooth flat surface. As for the crevices, you could use the edge of the sander to try to get into those small areas. Use an electric sander rather than a hand one, this will make your job alot easier and faster. Just don't sand it down so much to where other ares are deeper than others. Good Luck.

You can use an acid active paint remover for best diy job. sanding is pretty useless especialy for multi pain doors with there stupid grooves and gaps.
If you take it else where to have a proper job done on them dont sand blast them, you'll probablydamage the wood and need to take out glass. Take them and get them dipped in an acid bath. Works a treat and gets ALL the stain and paint out.
