Ok, for the second time today...
A chicken is bird, and what makes it a chicken is it's DNA.
Chicken DNA if you will....
Before chickens existed, we must assume that a similar looking bird, with similar looking DNA existed - the primitive (chickenlike) bird. Yet not, by definition a chicken.
At some stage in history, either by accident or breeding or so on, the primitive chicken DNA mutated (or evolved?) into chicken as we know it DNA. The offspring would have primitive parents, yet, itself be a genuine chicken.
As this was laid in an egg. The egg came first.... A non chicken laid a chicken egg which grew into the first chicken.

The chicken had to come first, probably through evolution....but some would argue that the chicken could be some weird freaky alien, in which case it came first before the egg. I'm not saying that a chicken is an alien....I think....I've confused myself.....Um, the chicken came first, or the egg, whatever you believe!!
Hope thats cleared it up because I've confused myself!!! :)

the egg came first, as eggs been around along time before chickens
however if you said what came first the chicken or the chicken egg then it would be chicken.

There is no valid answer. But if you ask me the EGG because chickens have to be hatched to be chicks before they become chickens and eggs can't be made without the hen....

In the words of Tommy Cooper... egg, chicken... chicken, egg. he he he... I guess it's a bit like Adam and Eve, the chicken was created in the form of one hen and one cockerel, and from there, came the first egg. :-)

Millions of years ago birds carried their babies inside and gave birth to live chicks but the mums could not escape predators when heavily pregnant so, they evolved to lay eggs instead. Takes a lot of imagination. It is also thought that they were the first land creatures to build a home or nest.

The chicken came first. God the creator made the chicken as he created everything else. This is my way of thinking.

Is there a rule in Yahoo \answers that says that this question must come up at least twice a week? It was the egg which was laid by a dinosaur and then mutated.
