Frankenmuth is really amazing, and with some of the best food in the State. Zenders.
Beautiful setting. Covered Bridge. Largest Christmas Store in the freaking world.

My favorite "off the beaten path" spot in Michigan would be Ella Sharp Park in Jackson just because it is so beautiful. But if you are looking for a great vacation spot for the weekend, try a B&B in Saugatuk. You will love it.

I personally like Mission Point, which is near Traverse City. Wineries, B&B's, and a lovely scenic drive. Head into Traverse City for shopping, etc...or enjoy the peace and quiet on the Point.
