Location is important. Check the Social Security Death Index, you will at least get a date. Then see if any of the CT papers have their obits online. If you can narrow down the location, you can probably get the local paper's write-up on the accident. Check with inter-library loan at your library as another source of newspapers. They sometimes have CDs of newspaper back issues, or can get them at a low cost.

Go to the courthouse in the city where she lived. Courthouses don't charge for public records.

You can't. You have to go to the funeral home and get it if you are listed as a dependent; if not, you need to go to the social security office to get death records. Either way it goes, you have to pay money.
