After the Civil war for a short period.
Then poll taxes and literacy test were introduced in Southern states. These worked to keep blacks from voting along with threats and acts of violence until the 1960 Civil rights act-when everyone was granted the right to vote, at east in theory. There were only a few black voters in Southern states until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which bared discrimination of all types based on race. But the literacy test and poll taxes stayed in place until the National Voting Rights Act of 1965. When they were mad entirely illegal.

The 15th amendment was ratified to allow Blacks to vote Feb 3, 1870.

The 15th amendment is part of the answer, but after that was passed, there were many other barriers that effectively prevented many blacks from voting for about a century, such as grandfather clauses or a poll tax.

The 24th Amendment, ratified in 1964, abolished poll taxes.

However, I'd like to know how anyone can have possibly originated on two seperate continents? African-American is an oxymoron term. Since both are continents and not nations, we could not be referring to dual citizenships, and must be discussing origination. The two continents are too far apart for anyone to be born in both. You are either one or the other, or neither... you can't be both.

without fear of reprisal black Americans were allowed to vote around 1972, prior to that they might be subjected to harassment, ridicule, poll taxes and KKK involvement.

It took 200 years to achieve any freedom for all men in this country. You might say the bi-centennial in 1976 was the year of first freedoms.

You have to register before you are allowed to vote. That goes for everyone.
