Yes, you have to get a pap. They are very important for us women. It is an early cancer screening tool as well as checking for other things.

They typically do not "hurt." They can be a little uncomfortable. Just explain to your doctor that you are frightened and he/she will talk you through the whole procedure.

At 18, I'm surprised you've never had an exam before. It's important to do so every year. You will be just fine. Millions of us do it every year. It's really nothing to be afraid of.

Best of luck sweetie!

In most cases you do need a pelvic exam and pap smear to get birth control, although some doctors will prescribe it to you without one. Since you are now 18 and sexually active, it's a good thing for you to get one annually anyway to make sure you don't develop cervical cancer..

It shouldn't hurt... it's not exactly a fun and wonderful experience you'd like to have every day, but if you are calm and try not to tense up it doesn't get beyond "uncomfortable". Tell your doctor you've never had a pap smear before, ask him to use a narrow speculum, and say "Stop, you're hurting me" if it is painful. It takes less than a minute, and if you can deal with a tampon or a penis in your vagina, you can certainly deal with it.

Good luck!

You do need to get a smear done it is an essential part of female screening and yes it may be a little uncomfortable but I can assure you rather this than cervical cancer!!
Please reconsider getting the contraceptive injection, I had a friend who was on it for 2 years and it took her another 5 years after coming of it to conceive. I was on it for nearly 10 years, it was recommended to me as I didn't want anymore children and I was suffering heavy periods, but for you I feel this would be the wrong choice. Eventually it makes your body think you are menopausal and like someone else has told you it can give you bone problems, believe them it does, it also causes lots of other problems eventually weight gain and I am not talking a little weight either, now I am off it the weight is falling off, I did go up three dress sizes, I am not trying to scare you but at 18 you don't need this injection, it will mess you up, and I am surprised your doctor has suggested it you being so young.
You must also find out for definite that you are not pregnant before you start any form of contraception too, don't worry the examination will be fine, a little undignified maybe but it doesn't take long and is soon over with.
Best Wishes

Yes, you have to take a pap smear before the doctor can put you on birth control because they need to make sure that you are healthy. They also need to make sure that the type of birth control you want will be compatible. Pap smears don't hurt, and it's good to have one done every year, so that you are aware of any health risks.

First of all I wouldn't recommend the shot, because it causes bone loss, and other problems. My friend was on the shot for a while and now she's having problems getting pregnant. You might want to consider the pill, I've been on the pill for 6 years and haven't had any problems. Yes you will have to get a pap test done, i have to get one done once a year before I get more pills. It doesn't really hurt, just kind of uncomfortable, and it doesn't take long.

No it isnt painful. When they insert the instrument ( i cant remember what it is called ) take a deep breath. One of my doctors taught me this tip and it never hurt. They use a lot of KY too so dont worry. Pap tests are important to have every year for detection of cancer.

Yes you do have to. It doesn't hurt. It may be uncomfortable, any one would be...especially if you have never had one done before. I have had many and many other procedures done down yonder and I am still uncomfortable with the entire thing. But they won't give you anything for birth control until you have this done! Sorry. the only one you can get is abstinence. and we all know how much fun that is...LOL

Yes you have to get a pap. It's not so painful as it is uncomfortable, but it only lasts a few minutes.

It does not hurt.

And yes, you have to get a pap before birth control.

It is very frightening, but it doesn't hurt. Just uncomfortable.
