If you burn a candle for several hours it will rid your house of the smoke smell. If you don't want to wash the curtains, try burning the candle first (It's cheaper). If that doesn't work spray with Fabreeze. If the smell is from smoke from a fire contact a professional cleaning company. They have sprays and special air cleansers which will get rid of the smell.

Depending on the material and the durability of the fabric...I would steam them while they are hanging.Hot steam helps defeat odors. Then while air drying ,I would spritz em with febreeze or new ALL fab freshner(I like that one) If the smell was really bad...I might opt for a steam cleaning on the carpet...and wash the walls with vinegar to get rid of the tabacco and tar residue that stays behind on every surface when you have a smoker in the house.
