for "vanity comes before a fall" ..........you can debate in favour of the topic by giving examples of known people like Hitler, Sadam Hussain, George W. Bush as he will not be the president of US in 2008, Saurav Ganguly as he was kicked out of the team.........
you can also suggest that those who don't have vanity are always successful people......like Jawarhar lal nehru who was prime minister for 14yrs, rahul Dravid who has come a long way in cricket etc......
I hope my suggestions will trigger your creativity in writing this debate

When you are so engrossed with yourself that you are not paying attention to what is going on around you, you will be defeated.
It is right to self-examine and be introspective with the goal of improving, but vanity implies that you are enamoured with yourself. Vanity means that you believe you are wonderful, you have attained greatness. There will always be someone willing to work on getting and being better and defeat you. The world is about change and if you stand still with vanity, you will fall.

actually, it's "pride goeth before a fall". To me, it means that if you get too cocky, too proud, you don't pay attention to all the little things you should, and don't notice someone or something about to trip you up or knock you down.

Narcissism is vanity and no one who is so self involved will be accepted in intelligent society, he or she will be rejected by most people.
