Which group is better?

In my opinion, you just can't confirm which group is better. They both are great in their own right. If I had to choose one, I would choose Genesis because of those extraordinary early albums that changed my attitude to listen to music. That was music really to have attention paid. Those early songs "Musical Box", "Harold the Barrel", "Fountain of Salmacis" are extraordinary classics to me. Yes has terrific songs as well, but you asked for one and I answer. But the two of them are fantastic groups. Yes had the advantage of having the best musicians, particularly Steve Howe on guitar and Rick Wakeman on keyboards. Genesis was more of a team. I prefer Genesis.

They appeal to different people for different reasons.

Cut out, immediately, Yes from 1980-1990 (or so) and Genesis from post-Hackett ("And Then There Were Three") on. The pop music that each created in these periods is all pretty much the same (though Yes was a little heavier.)

Previous to that, Genesis created "Progressive Pop" -- adventurous music with pop overtones. It is, therefore, accessable by more people, while still containing some challenging elements.

Yes, on the other hand, created "Symphonic Progressive" -- a blending of rock and classical music. This resulted in a somewhat less accessable, but more challenging type of music.

For whatever reason, my experience is that women pretty much hate Jon Anderson's voice. I've only met one or two female fans of Yes over the years.

Best albums (IMHO):
Genesis: Selling England by the Pound
Yes: Close to the Edge

Yes, hands down. They stayed true to their progressive roots while Genesis went pop.

I would say Genesis because I LOVE Phil Collins.

Genesis on this one.....a lot of talent there....Peter Gabriel, Mike & The Mechanics, and Phill Collins all got their start with the early years with the band......and they made some really good music!
