The triangle area formula is
A = 1/2 b h
A = 1/2(8)(12)
A = 8/2(12)
A = 96/2
A = 48

The area of a triangle is 1/2 * the base * the height.
1/2 * 8 * 12 = 48 inches squared.
D.

Think of a rectangle shape {A,B,C,D}.
AB is 8 inch, BC is 12 inch, CD is 8 inch, DA is 12 inch.
Now draw a line from A to C. You end up with two triangles.
Side AC of each triangle is the same. Side AB (triangle 1) and side CD (triangle 2) are the same size, so are BC and DA.
In other words: the triangles are exactly the same (although one is rotated when compared to the other).
Because you end up with two equivalent triangles, each triangle has half the area of the rectangle.
A rectangle's area is (b * h), so the triangle's area is (1/2 * b * h). Now the answer is easy to compute.
