Last night on the news--People "requested" the NO ONE use the N word.... At least in Atlanta. Now, I just want to see what everyone thinks of this ban. Personally I think it's an unconstitutional request...since it is asking us to never say a word...But we have Freedom of Speech... Plus, rappers are the ones who made that word "cool" at least if you are a black person... What do ya'll think about this ban?? Is it a proper request??

It's fine as long as they ban every other racial slur.
Cracker, honky, chink, ****,*******......... Why ban just 1?

We do have freedom of speech, and that is something that we should never take for granted. BUT, the N word cannot be used nicely...it's just plain rude, I don't care who uses it. I think that people should respect each other and not use it in any situation. In my opinion, when the rappers use it, it's the same as them using the terms B**ches and H*s...so disrespectful.

As for such a ban, I don't see how something like that could be enforced. People need to think before they speak.

I think it is a proper request.
Some people are ok with the N word these days but there are people who do find it very offensive and I think it is only fair that the word is banned so as not to cause any bad feelings.

I think the word has the power you give it. If we all stopped using the word, how much more offensive would we react to it when someone hatefully used it against us? The point of the word is to be hateful and painful. Turn it into a word that can be used as "friend" and that power goes away.

There is no free speech issue, because no one is proposing a law against using the word. Social pressure, which is what's at work here, is entirely legitimate, and I, for one, would be happy if it worked.
For everybody.
Including the rappers.

It is a word that has caused so much racial hatred/ division between people that it should be banned... We have enough problems in our country that we need to be more kind to each other... using that word only causes problems... I live near Detroit and unfortunately we still have racial problems and that word just adds to the problem and does nothing to fix the problem...

Why can't we all just get along with each other without saying hurtful words... sigh...........

An offensive word is offensive regrdless of who uses it...I have always considered it the same as profanity. As a society, we have come far enough where an ugly term like that (and others) should not be thrown around loosely.

Yes - there is freedom of speech but it should be tempered with respect for others. It's also not a bad idea to respect yourself. It's a tough situation.

There's nothing wrong with freedom of speech, but you have to use some good judgment.

It is offensive and I am black .I hate the word and dislike its orginal meaning. Its a sign of ignorance like the word "mongoloid" or redneck
