There are people unemployed in the Uk yes, for many different reasons. Not ALL are scroungers. Some will always find an excuse not to work, but others become unemployed through no fault of there own. In the UK, and many other countries, ageism is practiced, regardless of the laws. Many older people who have been made redundant, find it extremely difficult to get work. Immigration into the UK has certainly not helped, it is common knowledge now that some places are employing certain groups of people who are willing to work for peanuts.
The UK is a very expensive place to live, therefore a decent wage is essential. British workers who do work for low wages, also get benefits to help them. Does not mean they are not good people.
There will always be those who "play" the system. Its up to those who run the system to dig out the "players".

In short yes. I know its fashionable to say foreigners are taking all the jobs but this is complete rubbish Half of our lot are happy living on the back of the tax payer watching daytime TV and winging that the foreigners have driven wages down to a level that its not worth getting up for.
This usually from people who have never worked for more than a few months in their life's who have no skills but expect footballers wages.
There should be better incentives to get people off benefits and to work. In the mean time let them, if they draw dole, do community work to allow them the self respect of earning there money like the rest of us have to

This is a bit of a right wing, bigoted, ill informed and not too bright sounding answer...but how about full employment before issuing any more work permits for foreign workers? Personally i don't have a problem with paying taxes to support people unable to find work. The prosperity of a society is judged by the circumstances of the least fortunate.

When a government allows unlimited immigration to new EU members (Polish etc) they are doing it on purpose to suppress the wages of the existing population.
It increases the number of UK citizens on welfare and or makes them do work for lower and lower salaries.
It is a disgrace by our politicians in UK as other countries in the EU are not allowing mass worker economic immigration by new EU members.
Its a pity we cannot get some immigrant politicians to do the job for us instead of what we have got they would be 30% less and we could make them self employed so we don't have to pay any benefits or pension to them.

In ANY country that offers public welfare, there are always too many people on the dole who are living off hard working people's taxes. That's just the nature of humanity...there are always some folks who are trifling sorry, and will sit on their lazy a** and let someone else take care of them.
Just a sad (but inevitable) part of human nature...

That is a consequence of this world. As long as you have rich countries and poor countries, there will always be people leaving their countries to find better conditions. The main problem about UK, is that the government gives benefits to everybody, without making a research and find out if these people actually need benefits.
In my personal point of view, I think nowadays, most people have no respect for each other, so they request for benefits, when they don't need them, when there are other people out there that actually need these benefits.
I don't think this will change soon, it is a very risky political decision.

I cannot entirely agree with you. Those of you lucky to
have good jobs will always feel they have been cheated, what if one day you find yourself out of a job due to
factors beyond your control you will sing a different tune.
Be thankful that you have a good government and system
to match compared with the other countries so stop
winging and pay your god..am taxes.

i live in the usa. but we have the same remarks made by all us tax payers here too. my answer is sure, there are alot of people on assistance. some are scammers. but the ones that really need it should not be made to feel guilty. i never minded helping. my tax dollars could be going to worse things. i do agree that the scaming is rediculous. but not every one is a scammer.

Unemployment benefit is not as liberal as it used to be. We live in a society where the weak and vulnerable are supported. I would be more more inclined to protest about the rich causing hardship to the poor by tax defraud etc.
