Can't answer the microphone question, but you may want to just check and make sure it's legal in your area to record someone without their knowledge. In many states, it's a felony.

Is that legal??? Do you have to disclose to your employees that they MAY be videoed or recorded at any time. I would think that you have to, even if it is a memo that is sent or in the employee handbook, which most people don't really read. This way your butt is covered if anything should happen. In the case that they are informed at one point during their employment that this could possibly happen, try going to radio shack/or electronics store and let them know you need a mic that picks up talking from a distance, they should be able to help.
Just a word of advice, if this is for your own personal indulgence, don't do it, you could end up not working/owning a business or even in jail. If this is due to a trust issue, well maybe you should do a complete backround check on your employees like a bank. Have a meeting letting them all know what you are up to then see how many employees are left to record. My guess not many. Then maybe you won't even have to, the guilty party, if there really is one will be gone.

For all the people that indicate this is illegal, it usually is not in the case of an employer-employee relationship. I would like anyone who says it is illegal to point to the statute.
Outside of that, I am not aware of a good mic.

you may checklist what you like - yet with out the guy's consent it isn't any longer usable in any project. It comes under entrapment. besides, take benefit - pretend you do no longer understand he's there and recording and ask one in all your collegues if she's terrified of snakes as there is one interior the workplace. ..........And watch what you're saying. The boss won't think of incredibly of him for bringing particular conversations to his interest. Bosses understand finished nicely that they get noted as at the back of their backs - it is component of the territory and common. Having to take heed to it could have made him experience uncomfortable and he will resent the burk for putting him in that place.

You will need to spend some money on a serious microphone, probably something directional.
If you are having to do this then you have some serious issues at your workplace and I'd suggest looking for solutions to help your group work as a team.

I wouldn't do it. Your committing a crime and your employees can sue you for everything you own. Why would you want to secretly record them?

The person above is right, this may break the law, further, you may well be invading their privacy and they may have a tort action against you for doing so.
