Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the throat, which causes pain, discomfort and hoarseness. The causative agent is Streptococcus which responds to any of the synthetic penicillins, the course of the disease is short but some physicians believe that an increase in Vitamin C also shortens its course. Saline gargles are beneficial as well as some of the topical anesthetic solutions for relieving the discomfort. The ailment frequently accompanies other disease such as cold and the flu, as the force of coughing irritates the mucosa and allows entry of the bacteria. Any throat infection that persists for 48 hours needs professional care. Some throat irritations can be spawned by breathing through one's mouth in very cold air and recover without professional treatment. Several Lozenges are marketed that soothe the throat.
