An effort is made to protect the information, and often prisoners have a kind of "don't ask, don't tell" code amongst themselves, but often word gets round. In the case of a high profle media case it would be impossible to hide the fact - people like Craig Sweeney and Ian Huntley had their faces all over the newspapers and TV for months.
Sex offenders and child killers generally get a *very* poor reception in prison. Even amongst hardened criminals there is an ethical code of offences which are regarded as beyond the pale. The worst thing you can be seen as is a "nonce" (paedophile), and these prisoners are very vulnerable to bullying and physical attack. Prisons have to take measures to protect them, as they have a duty of care, and may house such offenders on a separate wing.

I agree with the first answer, if you were on tv, or you know someone that is in that prison, they will find out, and really it is only a matter of time before they do, especially if you are tight lipped about it. Then they will believe you are hiding the reason for your incarceration and will find out. If you are going to prison for child molestation or kiddie porn then you had better grow eyes in the back of your head, because even though you will be among people who have killed their own mother, its the child rapists that usually get their *** kicked (or worse) on a regular basis. It sounds weird but its true. "New fish" dont have a 4 course meal waiting and a penthouse suite with satin sheets or anything, you will go through some rough times at first....

Its like this: they don't know and don't have the right to know. Only time they will know is if the person himself or herself tells the other. Obviously if they watch tv and if the crime is severe, they will know off the bat what this prisoner "celebrity" is in there for. Obviously a negative or positive one. negative reception if the inmates despise him or her of what he or she did but positive only if it was the same as what they did. Though it could be negative even if the person that despises them did the same thing but with time (depending on the amount of tiime spent in prison) made this convict a "changed" man but never to be released from jail again.

They aren't formally told, its not like they have a reception party for them.
But yes, they do know. Sooner or later the rumour mill lets everyone know.
We are told sex offenders get treated worse.
Court proceedings and results are a matter of public record so i would guess in-mates do find out....info is power and all that.

I think certain crimes they would have to know about so that they can assess the risk to themselves and other prisoners.
