Inducing does have a tendancy to cause complications, more pain, and a longer labor.
Theres no reason to hurry things along.
Its the baby 's body that releases the hormone responsible for starting labor. And their bodies only produce that hormone when their completely ready to be born, and at optimal health and weight. Theres a reason why natural labor is better.
Unless you have a medical reason, dont bother to rush things.
My mom had 3 hour labors from start to finish. But when she was induced for one it lasted 22 hours. Same for my aunt. Same for my friend. They all ended up with extremely long long labor, and back labor, and extreme pain... I dont know if it was coincidence but all those babies needed extra care once they were born. Oxygen tents, jondace lights.. that sort of thing.
I'd avoid it.

I totally understand your concern. I am actually due December 8th. This is my 3rd child though... BUT my first child's labor was only 6 hours start to finish... my second was only 4, so they think she is going to come lightning fast!!! My hubby works 1/2 hr away, and hosp is about 45 min!! Not to mention we are new to this area and have no one we can leave other 2 kids with. I have an appt. today to discuss things.
My first was not induced... my second child was 2 weeks late. I went into labor the day of my dr's appt. I was 9 centimeters and they had to pop my water! I will say that the contractions were a bit stronger than my first child because they had to pop my water. I did mine natural, but you can always request pain meds. But ya know when it comes right down to it, you will have an amazing beautiful baby that you and your partner made. It truely is a miracle, no matter how or when that beautiful child arrives, you will be in instant love and awe that the pain or the way they entered the world won't matter. This is what I call my motherhood battle scars lol. I have 2 soon to be 3 children and would go through everything a thousand times over for them!! It's a part of life so try not to let people scare you too much, think more about that incredible little miracle you will hold in your arms afterwards and try to focus on that.
As far as should I or shouldn't I induce, I would say discuss it with your doctor and make sure it is something you want and would be safe. Good Luck and congradulations!!!

First of all, Congratulations!! Inducing labor should depend on several things. The main question is, 'Is the baby ready?' Often times when dr's and patients have decided to induce labor then an amnio is required to make sure the babies lungs are fully developed. The possibility for you to have a C-section is there whether you get induced or not, and there is no way to tell if induced labor will last longer for you. I think natural childbirth is a wonderful thing and you should not deprive yourself of the entire experience. Just think, wouldn't it be nice to get an unforgettable present on Christmas day.

my first child came naturally and it was SO VERY EXCITING! my next three pregnancies were all induced. i'm 19 weeks pregnant with my fifth child and I SO wanted to go into labor naturally to enjoy the excitement... it is just like the movies :) waking up and wondering if this is it... timing the contractions... running to the bathroom to shave and prep for the big day... racing out the door and forgetting your bags... calling your parents to let them know you are on your way. IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE in this PLEASE don't pass up your chance to have all of this fun. to this day i remember how upset my husband was when the school crossing guard came out with the stop sign when we were 3 blocks from the hospital and i was in the middle of a hard contraction :) he was so funny. he was afraid he would have to deliver the baby himself if the kids didn't cross the road fast enough.... oh how i laughed through the pain :)
i had my first child 7 MINUTES after we got to the hospital... we didn't even have time for a hospital gown. the baby was "crowning" when we got there. the doctor said it's a good thing i didn't have any urge to push or daddy WOULD have delivered that one in the car! ANYHOW, that's why i'm always induced now... my labors are to fast and the doctor wants me to make it to the hospital!!!
the induction the contractions are harder and longer... but the entire process is quicker. don't worry about c-sections... those are only done if it is REALLY necessary.
BEST OF LUCK on the x-mas baby! oh, and once you're in labor you won't CARE who the doctor is that is delivering the baby: you will only see a doctor once or twice the entire time you're in labor anyhow. the nurses come in and check on you all of the time until they decide it's necessary to call the doctor in.

With my second child my water had broke but I wasn't having contractions so without talking to me first they set me up with pitocin to induce labor. The pitocin didn't do anything but make contractions 20 times worse. They were going to give me a c-section so they had to stop the pitocin and about 2 hours after they stopped the pitocin my contractions did their own thing and I pushed him out in a half hours time. If they never gave me the pitocin in the first place he would have been born the day before and he wouldn't of had to go to the NICU due to complications. He is doing very well now but I wouldn't opt for the pitocin just because you don't want some random doctor. Ask to get your membrane's stripped, I did that and went into labor 3 days later. Thats your best bet.

Let the baby pick its due date. With Christmas as a due date you could easily not deliver until January. The more overdue she is, the further away from Christmas. As a December baby I can tell you that having a birthday near Christmas sucks. My first was due December 29th and I was terrified she's come in December. She waited until January 6th and I was so glad. Not to mention that induction hurts more. The medicine they give you starts up the labor process and it hurts more because labor tends to go faster than it would have naturally. I really really suggest letting the baby pick its own birthdate. The pain will be less and hopefully the baby will go past Christmas.

I personally have found that the pain of naturally progressing labor is much more tolerable than labor induced by pitocin. After receiving pitocin with my second labor, the contractions came so hard and fast I asked for an epidural within 20 minutes of receiving it. I had my son 30 minutes after that. The pitocin caused my dialation to go from 5 to 10cm in less than an hour...thank God for epidurals!

I was in the same situation as you. I was 20 and i was nervous because my doc kept saying that my baby was big and that I'd be over due. So I asked to be induced and he agreed once I was 37 weeks (full term) that it was okay to induce me. My labor was longer because it didn't happen naturally of course (18+) hours but the pain was bearable. Good luck
