Rickenbacker invented the first electric guitar;
Fender built the first solid body electric guitar (1947);
Gibson was the first to combine classic guitar building techniques with electronics and also invented the humbucking pickup.

Well , Wikipedia has Adolph Rickenbacker inventing the electric guitar, but i always thought Les Paul and Leo Fender were more at hand , and that was around 1952 - 1953. Of course some would argue that Charlie Christian was playing amplified in the 1930's , but i think that was an acoustic with some sort of crude transducer attached , not a true electric..

I know Les Paul invented the first solid body electric guitar. Chet Atkins and Les Paul were friends and he assisted in building it. As for who invented the first electric guitar VINSTER is probably right.
