Firstly, being 5 weeks pregnant in medical terms is basically saying there is something in there that can grow into a baby, but at the moment it isn't. They won't be able to gauge anything about the umbilical cord or heartbeat because the umbilical cord hasn't quite fully formed to provide all the goodness your growing baby will need and there isn't quite a fully formed heart there to beat because it hasn't grown to that stage yet.
Secondly, an irregular gestational sac is nothing to worry about. It just means it's different from the 'norm'. Your womb is perfectly capable of providing a home to what will become your baby and if you had an abnormal uterus, or perforations in the womb, which could cause problems, it would likely be noticed during your scan. They have obviously sent you away for a few weeks so that when you come back they will have something to look at!
Most women never get a scan until arund 12-16 weeks so you should be happy they are taking an interest!
In the meantime, try to relax, don't worry about it, and look after yourself, getting plenty of sleep too.
Take care.

At five weeks for me they were only able to see the sac...no pole either and no heartbeat. I had to wait until about the 7th week for the heartbeat. The sac is able to fix itself sometimes. So I am told. I had an irregular sac too and now it seems to be becoming more ovul like it should be. I'm nine weeks. Your still very early...so don't worry.

I read about a woman who very early on they couldn't see anything in the sac and they thought she miscarried or was about to and were going to do a DNC. The nurse decided to check her right before her DNC and there was the heart beating away.

God Bless!

Hi Sweety: Stay positive - It's too soon for anybody to know because it's not really a fetus yet; but I do think you should call your doctor and discuss the scan with him. Here are some stages and pictures of fetal development. As you can see they would not expect to hear a heartbeat right now usually the hear is detected at about 17 weeks

Here is a really good explanation of the weeks of development for the fetus

Sometimes the scan machines are old or your uterus is tipped.

don't worry. A lot of times the problems or irregularities that may occur, happen because nature is like that. I don't think there is any cause for concern at this point. Just remember to take lots of Folic Acid because this helps prevent fetus malformations. I'm sure you'll have a nice healthy baby.

It is hard to say what will happen, but the heart doesn't even start beating until sometime in the 5th week anyway. The fetal pole isn't seen until 6 weeks at the earliest, so this may all be normal.

this happened to me and i losted my baby i went for my scan at 8 weeks and there wasn't anything there but they said that it could have been to small to see anything so i had to go back in 2 weeks which would have made me 10 weeks so they said they should have been able to see it at that point so i went back had a scan still couldn't see anything but i didn't want to believe it so they did an internal scan and nothing was there if i was still pregnant i would have been 5 months i miss the baby so much even though i didn't him or her i am sorry to be the 1 to tell you this but it is more than likely that you will lose it

If they were concerned, they would've had you check in to the hospital-and definitely wouldn't make you wait 2 weeks for a scan! The only thing that is really going to reassure you is for you to make an appointment with your GP,and ask him/her to explain exactly what is going on. Please relax-I know it's hard-but stress isn't good for the baby or you.

At this stage your baby isn't a baby or fetus yet. It's developing into one. You can't hear a heartbeat on a doppler until 14 weeks with an intrauterine doppler it's 9 weeks I think. It's you're concerned then I would contact my doctor to have him clarify what he told me. Good luck!

you should of asked the person doing the scan what it all ment. im sorry but i have no idea whats going to happen to your baby, maybe you could call your dr and speak to the nurse, they might be able to ease your mind at least, good luck.
