The word split in BANANA SPLIT refers to the bits and pieces of banana! Banana split with ice-cream, nuts and choc. or strawberry sauce on top- yummy!

Splitting the banana into two the long way and placing multiple scoops of Ice cream (your choice) between them, then all the whip cream and choice of nuts... and dont forget the hot fudge.. ENJOY!

I think it's because u split a bannana straight down the middle and put the ice cream in the middle and that's why it's called a bananna split.
