i know they started as pictographs, but how did they evolve?

Hello dear!
They started by picturing objects and eventually ended in the different types of Hieroglyphics, depending on the status of each of the developer and the materials used!
The progress from Hieroglyphics to Linear A, Linear B and Alphabet was done in Crete, Greece.
It is great to visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraclion, Crete to observe all this development.

the hieroglyphics appear to be an independent invention in writing. they did not evolve from cretan linear a or sumerian cuneiform, rather they possibly gave the cretans certain signs, though this is not concrete.
