Mercutio was killed by Tybalt; because of Romeo's friendship with Mercutio, he kills Tybalt, even though he resisted fighting with him earlier (remember, Romeo has just come from his secret wedding to Juliet, who is Tybalt's cousin, so initially he wanted to avoid a fight with Tybalt). Because Romeo has killed a man who had already killed a man, the Prince banishes Romeo instead of ordering his death. It is because of the banishment that Juliet and the Friar concoct the plot to make everyone think Juliet is dead, but unfortunately, Romeo thinks she's dead, too, and he kills himself. Then Juliet kills herself, yada yada yada... So essentially Romeo's friendship with Mercutio sets off the chain of events which lead to the end, to the deaths of the two lovers.

if tybalt hadn't accidental killed his friend, mercutio, romeo would not have to avenge his death and violate the prince's order ending the feud. because he broke the law romeo is banished, and Juliette is heartbroken. her father thinks she's grieving over her cousin tybalt's death, so arranges a marriage to cheer her up, and then hilarity ensues.

Without Mercutio, there would have been no comic relief related to women's underpants.
