Schooling is definitely the best way to learn CAD. AutoCAD is a vast program, and even through you may have a handy grasp on drawing lines and circles in some organized manner, you still need to learn the industry. Whether that industry be architecture, mechanical or electrical. There is a vast amount of information and convention in how drawings are prepared and put together in each of these divisions. It is NOT something someone can learn at home. Draftsman's salaries can range from $10-$40 an hour depending upon experience.

www.caddigest.com is a good resource for CAD.

3DSMax is a bit different. If you simple want to be a renderman and jack-of-all-trades then find every internet tutorial you can find and learn it all. Start down one road such as architectural, landscape, or character modeling and specialize, but also be able to do all 3.

Salaries range by jobs, usually 3D work is done by piecework.

If you want to land some good paying jobs, start small.. to build a good portfolio, build things needed by the industry, look at what people need..

Check http://www.turbosquid.com

Another good way, if you like gaming, is to start getting your name around via map or model building.. visit http://twhl.co.za/ to get a flavor of the industry for Valve's products like Half-life, Counter Strike, etc. The map builder is free too..

Have a website ready with your workings and background.. you can email me if you need more help..
