Don't get hung up on the $51.1 million number for Matsuzaka. The Red Sox have all the leverage. I've heard the Seibu Lions might agree to put a few million of that money toward Matsuzaka's salary if that's what it takes to get a deal done. Remember, if the Red Sox don't sign him the Sox keep the $51.1 million.
Johnny Damon was given a reasonable offer and chose to leave. The Red Sox have Jacoby Ellsbury who will be ready for centerfield in 2008 and has star potential. They did not want to sign Damon to a long-term deal for above market value. The Crisp signing was a smart move; if not for his injury last year you would not be missing Damon so much right now.
If J.D. Drew is signed, he will provide the protection for Papi. It's a risk because he's been injury prone (The Sox know all about injury prone right fielders!). Remember that if Manny is traded (I think he will be this time) Boston will be getting some nice pieces in return. There are at least four teams rumored to be interested; competition means more value for the Sox.
You've got to take chances if you want to keep up with the Joneses, er, Steinbrenners.

There are two answers that says it all. They are the new evil empire and they are also making the same sort of bad moves that the Yankees did in the 80's. There is the saying that you become what you hate and the Red Sox are doing just that. The Red Sox need to take a look at the good things the Mets, Phillies and others have been doing by bringing up the players from the minors and letting them become the face of the team. I don't know anyone out there who wouldn't want a Ryan Howard, David Wright or Jose Reyes. Just try to keep bonehead moves (trading Kazmir for the wrong Zambrano) to a minimum and you will have success. The Yankees, with bringing up Cano, Wang, Cabrera and Hughes (next season) are following that same model, bringing up the youth.

idk what the hell is going on. This all started when they did not make a move at the trade deadline this past year, because they wanted to build on their young pitching but lack of experience and a inconsistent bullpen killed them.
They need to keep Manny at all costs or trade him for 4 or 5 decent players because he will put up 30 homers and 100 RBI every season.
JD Drew better not come to boston....al though nixon gets hurt and has not been productive...we could save some money because he is a true sox dirt dog.
This japanese guy...he is good but not worth all of this money..u could get 2 or 3 decent pitchers for 51 million and will he be able to adapt and perform in boston?

this is comming from a true baseball and yankee fan. First of all I think you are missing something. You have just faced two of the best pitching staffs in the majors on the road. While i agree they should of done a little better great pitching usually beats great hitting, witness the yankees the last couple of yrs.\ if you don't believe. The pitchers they have faced over the last 8 games are all top shelf guys even Joba who had a bad outing. So stop blaming your hitters and start looking at your bulpen. It has be underperforming and overworked with injuries to wakefield. While the loss of bay hurts I don't see it as factor except maybe in game 2 of the yank series. I was so happy when the yankes spent most of their money on pitching this yr and the dividend is starting to pay off in the 2nd half. Either way get your pen and starting rotation back healthy and you will be competative. Just one mans view.

You're facing the same we in San Francisco had when they traded Kent and Bonds got walked also.
But you're also facing what I call the "Marlinization" of the winning team - win the Series, dismantle the team.
I'd personally like to see a rule of no more than 5 or 6 trades per team each season except for injury/retirement. That way the teams would stay together longer.
Also there was no reason to get rid of Billie Mueller. They also treated J T Snow poorly (both ex-Giants whom I admire deeply).
As for signing a godzilla pitcher, that's just one arm in a rotation. Same happened in San Francisco with Schmidt and Ortiz - not enough to win, just enough to get your hopes dashed in the playoffs.
P.S.: I hope Ramirez stays, but if not he is welcome in the City By The Bay I guarantee!

The Red Sox will get their bid money back in new revenue out of Japan.
Johnny Damon would bring in that? out of your mind.
Damon is an aging lead off man, hardly worth 4 years, yet alone at 13mill a piece. It was a risk not worth taking
Drew is young, sure with injury concerns, but at least hes not a spead guy, hes a power guy who will keep him power long than Damon will keep his speed.
Nixon gets injured every month, and you want him back.. go figure..

Not enough room here for all the reasons. Look internally. Theo. He is screwing the Sox on purpose. They would not pay what he is worth and then they rehire him. The Sox made changes he did not like when he was out. I see not other real reason. Management needs to reign the boy in. John Henry is the only one who can really talk to him, but he lets Larry be his mouth. Bad move. Ditch Larry and let Theo do his job under Henry.

Yeah, they lost have their infield and have been having difficulties signing that Gyro Pitcher from Japan. They will probably trade Manny to Phillies for Pat Burrell & Danny Sandoval or Cole Hamels. They were supposed to be signing Julio Lugo for SS but haven't heard any more of that.

the boston red sox are like internet stocks in the mid 90's their performance is not based on anything tangible and they are going to colapse. Red sox fans are the most obnoxious people that I deal with on a regular basis. Johhny Damon doesn't deserve the money especially when the club is paying that for the opportunity to speak to the japanese picther (I forget his name)

The Red Sox are fine. I don't know what moves they will make, but I have full confidence in Theo Epstein. He has done it before and he will do it again. What you ask?? Bring a world championship team to Boston!!
Chow!!
