Interesting question, and I think I have the answer. It really depends on the gender.
Male roles tend to be more talent than image. A few good examples of non attractive men that have been lead roles are Nicolas Cage, Steve Bushemi, Paul Giamati, and Tommy Lee Jones. They made it because of talent.
Women roles on the other hand, tend to lean more towards image. Jessica Simpson comes to mind first.
There are of course exceptions. Kathy Bates is superb, yet not classically beautiful. Brad Pitt is okay, but it's his image that keeps people interested.

Talent because a image might get you noticed but talent will keep you on the top.
