I've always used HP's at home and college because they are reliable and last ages.
A few weeks ago I bought myself an HP Deskjet F380 which does printing, scanning and photocopying. And it only cost me £50. Its superb!

you can actually get an AIO (all in one) (printer/scanner/copier or printer/scanner/copier/fax) for the same price as a regular printer.
Everyone will prob tell you HP because they're #1 in the industry and been around long. Working in an electronics retail store, I will recommend what I think is best. Epson. Epson has individual ink cartridges so you replace what you need (HP still uses only 2 cartriges; 1 black and 1 with three colours in it)
Epson is durable, small/compact depending on the model and their customer service is awesome.
Dont recommend Brother because they dont back their warranty at all. Canon is ok.... NOT LEXMARK- the newer Lex's dont last as long. Old school Lexs did, but not new ones. They break more easliy (their rollers inside) and cartridges can get expensive for the small amount of ink you get.
Again, my choice is Epson. Strong, durable, great ink, customer service rocks, great price for machine AND ink.
Good Luck!
(any model in an AIO is good--they just have a new release!)

You didn't mention how much you are willing to spend. I recently purchased an HP 2600N color laser and it does a great job printing web pages. It's also fairly fast, so there's no waiting for the inkjet to print the page or the ink to dry. I picked ours up new with full capacity toner cartridges for $300, so if you don't mind the initial outlay, it's worth it. I got tired of paying almost $40 a pop for Lexmark ink cartridges. The Lexmark prints fine, but per page cost is too high.

As "Duty Scrooge" I use Epson with a Continuous Ink Supply
http://www.inkexpress.co.uk/index.php?p=Home
Heres some Epson Printers,
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/computing/peripherals/printers/browse?search=Epson
Team a Cont. Ink Supply with an epson 220 and for just over 100 pounds you are there. The Cont.Ink is so cheap to use, by the time you have used the ink that comes with the kit you can afford to put the printer in the skip and buy another (as if you would!!1)

Get a HP printer. I've had different models for years and they're reliable: don't forget: the cartridges are what are expensive, not the printer: whatever model is currently selling: you shouldn't pay more than $100: PS: if you need a new computer soon, buy an entire system from Dell or IBM: the printer will be in the package, "free". Check out Shopzilla for all prices, and HP website

Go for an Epson as you can buy compatible inks for their printers, which will save you a fortune in the long run. Canon do compatible inks but there is a limited selection.
Lexmark and HP have copyrighted their inks so will not allow manufactures to copy their inks, so the original inks cost a lot more.
Trust me on this one and save some money
Buy you epson printer then follow the link for your ink, you'll be amazed at how much you will save.

HP is my recommendation. If you can afford the initial outlay of a color laser DEFINITELY do it. Compare the cost of an ink jet and color laser printer and the cost of ink jet cartridges and toner - you will find that it does not take too many cartridge changes to get to the price of a color laser and toner. If you are in a big city then shop around. In Austin TX I recently bought a HP Color Laser used that still had the original toner in it for $189.00 - I have printed over 4000 color pages and still haven't changed toner.
If you do go the ink jet route - price the cartridges and estimated number of pages they will last for - that is the real cost.

I have used Hewlett Packard (HP) printers for years for my personal use, as I consider these to be the best. Epson printers are cheap and the refills are cheap but the general quality can be poor. Lexmark printers are very cheap, but the refills for them are very expensive. Canon Printers can have problems with the ink refills and there is a lot of fuss and bother with them
I would look for HP as they are the best.

An entry level canon like an ip2200 or a canon ip1600. Canon is currently making printers that provide better value than most HP and Epson Units. They are high quality prints and Canon offers a 100 year archival guarantee.
