He pardoned Richard Nixon. He was also the only president to have never been elected. He was appointed vice-president after Agnew resigned and became president when Nixon resigned. Ford was only in office for a little over 2 years. He wasn't a great speaker, and lost to Carter because the country wanted a fresh start with a Democrat and an outsider.

Part of it was the idea that he wasn't elected, at all. Not for President, not for Vice, and a lot of people weren't happy about that. It didn't help that one of his first actions as President was to pardon Nixon who many people felt belonged in jail.
