Is it illegal for someone to rent an apartment to a minor without consent from the minors parents? If so how can I find information on the internet about it so I can present it in court?

The reason I was asking is because I wasn't emancipated from my parents and I needed a place to stay so I signed a contract for a year lease to an apartment. I got into school early and told my landlord I was leaving. There was about 5-6 months left on the lease, but I had to move for school. Now he is taking me to court to get the money for the 5-6 months I didn't live there! I was only 17 when I signed the lease, and because of school I have no money left so I am trying to get a case against him.

if they are under 18 years old, they cannot leagally enter into a contract. so if you had them sign a lease, it is not valid or legal and they can break it at anytime.

If you are not emancipated, you cannot sign a contract. A lease is a contract, so he has no claim, whether or not he knew you were a minor.

So congratulations - you started your adult life by getting away with fraud.

What you should be asking is "Do I morally owe the landlord this money, which I promised to pay while knowing I was under age at the time?". The answer is yes, you do.

But beware - when you get away with fraud and injure someone else this way, it will eventually come back to bite you - karma will take care of it, one way or another. If I were you, I'd tell him he has no claim in law, but that I'd try and pay back the money over the next year, since I misled him.

No it is NOT illegal, but it is foolish businesswise. A minor can get out of any contract signed with an adult at ANY TIME. The contract is binding on the adult, if the minor wishes to hold firm.
